The California Coastal Commission had experienced years of decreasing attendance at its Annual Coastal Cleanup Day. Research showed that the more volunteers we obtain, the more people we educate and motivate to take small day-to-day sustainable actions to keep the trash on our streets from becoming the trash on our beaches. By making the waterways and beaches speak to Californians, we increased volunteer participation by 20% and garnered a 59% increase in total pounds of trash cleaned up.
